Born and raised in the cornfields of Central Illinois, I dabbled in any sort of competition that was offered. I started swimming for the CCMY Aquachiefs in 1997, and continued until I finished swimming for the University of Illinois in 2012. During that time, I also tried my hand at track, cross country, and triathlons.  My first triathlon was the 2002 Champaign Mini Tri, with my first win being at the 2004 edition of the event.  I was diagnosed with a condition called Wolf-Parkinson-White Syndrome during my last year of swimming at the University of Illinois. I had a successful catheter ablation done in January 2012 that removed the extra electrical pathway in my heart, and allowed it to beat normally. In August 2012, I turned in my Orange & Blue and moved out to Boulder, CO to pursue a graduate degree and begin triathlon training in earnest.
